It’s always interesting to know what direction Kiwis are moving in when it comes to our favourite new and used cars. Based on the Motor Industry Association (MIA) sales statistics here’s what the 2017 list looked like half way through this year. Following on from last year’s strong trend, three of the top five passenger vehicles sold in NZ are new and used utes and three of the top ten NZ cars are new and used SUVs.
The popular Ford Ranger ute romps in well ahead of arch rival, Toyota Hilux. In fact, more Rangers have been sold in the first half of this year than the Toyota Corolla, Suzuki Swift and Holden Commodore combined.
The much loved Toyota Hilux is currently the second-best-selling vehicle of any type in NZ, followed by yet another ute, the Holden Colorado. The Colorado may be well behind the Hilux but it recently passed the iconic Toyota Corolla in the chart to gain third spot.
It may have been overtaken by a ute but the Corolla continues to hold its place as the nation’s favourite car, regarded as a benchmark for reliability.
Yet another big selling ute, the Mitsubishi Triton markets itself as the true ‘lifestyle’ ute with the GLS able to be driven on the road in 4WD mode. Toyota’s RAV4 sits close behind in car sales figures and Kia’s Sportage SUV a relatively new entrant in the charts nipping at its heels. Finally, there’s not much separating the last three top selling cars, the Nissan Navara ute, Mazda’s CX-5 SUV and NZs favourite van, the Toyota Hiace.
